Collections

Among the CML's 35,000 items are many discreet collection of materials to help our students and faculty, all with different call numbers and found in different places throughout the library.

Keep these things in mind when browsing these collections:

Juvenile Literature
The CML has a large, comprehensive collection of juvenile literature for children/young adults from Pre-K through high school. This collection includes:

  • Picture books
  • Early readers
  • Juvenile fiction
  • Nonfiction
  • a small collection of Braille books

Kits & Devices
This collection of P-12 teaching resources provides instructional aids for classroom teaching and storytelling. The kits are available for checkout in clear plastic hanging bags for easy viewing and to keep small parts together.

The Kits collection includes such items as educational games, puzzles, math manipulatives, charts, maps, posters, and storytelling puppets. Big Books, large versions of picture book classics designed for group sharing, are also available in this collection.

Professional Materials
The Professional Materials Collection (PMC) contains materials for use by teacher education students and P-12 teachers.

Examples of items in this resource collection include a wide variety of activity and idea books, thematic units, curriculum standards, and literature notes to accompany juvenile literature volumes. Also represented are materials in subject areas such as:

  • lesson planning
  • classroom management
  • children's literature
  • classroom teaching skills

Reference
The CML has a collection of over 700 authoritative reference resources including encyclopedias, atlases, dictionaries, guides to books and stories for children, bibliographies, children's literature reviews and indexes. Biographical information on authors and illustrators of children's literature and reviews of their works can be found here in series titles such as Authors and Artists for Young Adults, Children's Literature Review, and Something About the Author. These books are shelved in the Reference section by call numbers using the Library of Congress classification system.

Textbooks
CML's textbook collection contains Clark County School District adopted textbooks for elementary through high school levels, following the procedures indicated in the Nevada State Textbook Adoption Resources guide. Teacher's editions, workbooks, or guides accompany some of the textbooks. The textbooks cover a variety of classroom subject areas such as language arts, mathematics, science, and reading.

Juvenile E-Media
The CML Juvenile E-Media collection is made up of children and young adult fiction e-books and e-audiobooks. This growing collection, powered by OverDrive, contains award winning titles from various genres including historical fiction, sci-fi, and fantasy. Compatible with most mobile devices, OverDrive is easy to use with no late fees! This service is available to all UNLV students, faculty and staff.
